Decking – DIY vs Installation Service

When choosing where to purchase PVC decking for your garden you basically have two options – you can Do It Yourself, or you can ask someone to Do It For Me (or what we like to call ‘Do It FOR Yourself’!)

You can try find a PVC or Composite decking alternative from some big-box retail companies that you are able to fit yourself at home, or you can purchase PVC decking from a bespoke supplier and installer such as Fitrite. So what should you do?

Hassle

As part of our supply and fit service, we offer a free quote and design. This means one of our specialists visits you with samples and discusses your requirements, as well as designing your deck with you. Crucially they will also conduct a ground survey, taking note of vital things such as drainage, water pipes, electrics, gas pipes and other things that you may not consider if you’ve not got a trained eye. Of course if you’re a trained surveyor – or you employ an independent surveyor – then this might not be a big deal for you! At the end of your appointment you will be given a written quote of everything discussed – and all there is left to do is book your installation date.

Installation

Your time is valuable. You could spend it slaving and sweating in the garden preparing the ground, building a sub-frame and laying your deckboards – or you could get us to do it for you. Of course price will be a factor in this situation – and it goes without saying that paying someone to do something for you will always be more expensive than doing it yourself – so why wouldn’t you reserve a weekend, invite a couple of friends over and do it yourself?

  • It’s not as easy as you think – Sure it might look fine at first, but the sub-frame needs to be perfect to make sure there’s no warping or instability.
  • It takes longer than you think – At Fitrite we have multiple teams of installers who have years of experience under their belt. They work quickly and efficiently and know exactly what they’re doing without needing to consult YouTube videos – save yourself multiple weekends of stress and get the professionals in!
  • It’s harder than you think – It should go without saying that the subframe is incredibly heavy, the deck boards are heavy, moving a mitre saw around is awkward and scribing around obstacles and unexpected angles is tricky.
  • You’re on your own – Our research suggests that few, if any, DIY stores will assist you once you’ve purchased your deck boards. We’ve even encountered customers who weren’t advised they needed a subframe to lay their decking on! Once you walk out of the shop, that’s it. On the other hand if Fitrite installs your deck for you, it’s like your garden is magically transformed.

If you’re a professional deck installer – or a joiner or carpenter – then the above may not apply to you!

Aftercare

The most important thing to note is that Fitrite decks come with a 10 year warranty. This gives you the peace of mind that the deck won’t rot, warp or fall apart once it’s in your garden!

Alongside the warranty, if you have any problems or queries you won’t need to hit the internet on how to fix it – simply give our Customer Service team a call and they will be able to help you straight away.
